This quad print (four prints) is an excellent choice for those want a good overview of this ancient community as it was in the years preceding the massive transformation of the 1920's. With views of the Village Cross, the old Water-Pump, the Paris Church and the Georgian Manor House (owned by Heslop's the brewers), one of the oldest buildings in the village at that time - this provides an atmospheric view of Billingham as it was during the Victorian era.
There has been a water-mill at Billingham since medieval times although very few people today remember it as the last mill was demolished in the early 1930's. The water-mill shown here in this rare image dates from c1700 when the original medieval site was re-developed. The print shows the mill house and the adjoining buildings occupied by the miller and his family. Taken c1904, this was a time when use of the mill was in decline. The mill stood at the end of Mill Lane and looked across fields and marshland often used by the villagers for rough-shooting. An excellent present for those with an interest in the technology of the past.
